Helping my grandfather, Guy Valvano, write Covering a Lifetime in Sports was a deeply meaningful experience that taught me invaluable lessons, not just about storytelling but about life itself. Through organizing his decades of memories and collaborating on his autobiography, these six lessons stood out to me:
- Organization Is Key
One of the first things I learned was the importance of organization. My grandfather had a meticulous filing system, categorizing his notes, clippings, and memories by topics and events. This made it easier for us to find relevant materials when compiling his stories. Whether you’re creating a scrapbook or writing a book, organizing your thoughts and documents helps streamline the process, ensuring that nothing gets lost. - Setting Boundaries
As we worked on the book, I realized how important it is to set boundaries. My grandfather was dedicated to the project but knew when to step away and rest. The book reminded me that while working on something meaningful is rewarding, it’s essential to protect your energy and time to avoid burnout. Establishing a balance between commitment and personal well-being is vital in any long-term project. - Priorities Matter
Through this process, my grandfather made it clear that some things are more important than others. Even with deadlines looming, he always prioritized family gatherings and time with loved ones. This taught me that while goals are important, people and meaningful experiences should always come first. The memories we make with family are more lasting than any project we undertake. - The People You Meet Along the Way
A major theme in my grandfather’s career was the relationships he built. He often said that the people he met through sports writing were as valuable as the stories themselves. This experience reinforced the idea that the journey, and the connections you build, are just as important as the end product. Whether you’re compiling a journal or writing a book, the people who support and inspire you add immeasurable value. - Gratitude is Essential
My grandfather often reflected on how grateful he was for the opportunities he had and the people who helped him along the way. This project became a reminder to express gratitude for everyone who contributes to your journey, whether by offering guidance, encouragement, or simply being there. Gratitude keeps us grounded and appreciative of the moment. - Preserving Memories is Powerful
Throughout the process, I learned how meaningful it is to preserve memories for future generations. Whether through a journal, scrapbook, or book, capturing stories keeps them alive and ensures they’re passed down. This book became more than just a project—it became a family legacy, something to cherish and share with future generations.
We’re excited to share his story with you and encourage others to do the same with their loved ones. Even if it’s not in the form of a book, recording conversations or keeping journals can create priceless memories for future generations. There are even apps that make it easier to document stories.
For our family, this book will always be a treasured keepsake, something we can pass down to our children and their children. Everyone has a story worth sharing, and we’re honored to share Pop’s with the world. For more information on his book visit www.guyvalvano.com
